Many people assume that a cassette safely stored in a cupboard is safe. The opposite is true. The magnetic tape inside a VHS cassette is highly prone to decay, and time is working against you.

  • Demagnetisation: over time the magnetic layer weakens, which shows as loss of colour, a faded picture, more static and worse sound.
  • Physical damage: tape can become brittle or sticky, and mould can appear if the cassettes were stored somewhere damp.
  • Mechanical wear: every playback wears the tape slightly – so, ironically, watching the video is what destroys it.
  • No equipment left: as we mention in our frequently asked questions, VHS players stopped being made long ago. Finding a working, decent player gets harder every year.

An important warning: if the tape has snapped, never repair it with sticky tape. The adhesive spreads inside the video mechanism and can destroy both the cassette and the player. Better not to play a damaged cassette at all, and have it dealt with professionally.

How professional VHS digitising works

You may have thought about digitising VHS at home. Cheap USB capture devices exist, but their quality is often poor – the result is a jittery picture, badly synchronised sound and generally worse quality than the tape itself can offer. At Záloha vzpomínek we therefore take a professional approach that guarantees the best possible quality:

  1. Visual inspection: every cassette is checked first. If the tape has snapped or is dirty, we offer additional services such as splicing and mould cleaning (see our price list).
  2. Top-end equipment: for the VHS transfer itself we use professional Panasonic NV-HS1000 video recorders with TBC (Time Base Correction), which digitally stabilises a jittery picture.
  3. Signal conversion: the analogue signal passes through an external Canopus ADVC 300 A/D converter, also with TBC, which is what keeps the sound perfectly in step with the picture.
  4. Basic treatment included: we crop the black edges, reduce noise, normalise the audio and balance the colours.
  5. Saving to a medium: the finished digital file goes onto the medium you choose. The most popular is VHS to USB or VHS to a flash drive, which makes playback easy on a PC, a laptop or a modern television.

As standard we convert to MP4 with the H.264 codec. It is a universal format that plays on virtually anything – a computer, a smart TV, a phone or a tablet. If you need a different format, just tell us in advance through the contact form.
