Do you assume that tapes sitting untouched in a box in a cupboard are safe? Unfortunately the opposite is true. A video cassette is not carved in stone – it is a complex chemical product that began ageing the second it left the production line.
Most manufacturers in the 1980s and 1990s quoted a recording lifespan of around 15 to 20 years. Today we are often well past 30. At Záloha vzpomínek we see daily what time does to these media. Here is why digitising video tapes is a race against the clock.
What is inside a cassette
To understand the decay, you need to know what tape is made of. Think of it as a sandwich:
- The base layer (Mylar): the clear plastic that holds the tape together.
- The magnetic layer: iron oxide, which carries the picture and sound.
- The binder: a special adhesive that holds the magnetic particles onto the plastic.
And it is the binder that is the Achilles heel of every format – VHS, VHS-C, Hi8 and Mini DV alike.
When the tape turns sticky
The archivist's greatest fear is a phenomenon called Sticky Shed Syndrome . The binder absorbs moisture from the air and begins to break down chemically. What happens then:
- The tape becomes tacky to the touch.
- Layers of oxide flake off during playback.
- The sticky residue immediately clogs the player's video heads.
- The player stalls, the tape can snap and the picture is gone.
If your tapes are kept in a cellar, an attic or a garage where temperature and humidity swing about, the process speeds up considerably.
Other enemies of your memories
Besides binder breakdown, there are further threats to your family videos :
- Demagnetisation: the Earth's magnetic field and household electronics slowly weaken the magnetic signal. The picture loses colour, gets grainier and the sound hisses.
- Mould: in damp conditions a white film forms inside the cassette and eats away the organic components of the tape. Such a cassette must be professionally cleaned before digitising – more in our article on tape repair.
- Mechanical deformation: tape that has not been rewound for years can print through onto itself or become wavy.
Why not to wait until you have time
Decay is not linear. It is not that the picture gets one per cent worse each year. It often happens in jumps – a tape that played fine last year can be ruined this year the moment it goes into a recorder, because the binder has reached a critical point of breakdown.
Signs that time is nearly up: the picture snows or skips during playback, the sound is muffled or wavers, and colours are washed out or shifted towards purple or green.
The only answer: change the medium
There is no getting around physics. The only way to stop the process is to convert the analogue magnetic recording into digital data.
