It is every retro enthusiast's nightmare. You put a tape in the recorder, there is an odd noise, the picture vanishes and the machine spits the cassette out with a tangle of crumpled tape hanging from it. Or worse – the tape has snapped.

That is when the cold sweat starts. „That was the wedding! That was the only footage of grandma!“ The first reaction is panic, the second is reaching for sticky tape. Stop right there. Repairing a VHS cassette is precise work that needs the right tools. At Záloha vzpomínek we can rescue cases that look beyond saving.

Never repair a tape with sticky tape

This is the most common mistake we see. People try to join snapped tape at home with ordinary office sticky tape. Here is why that is a road to disaster:

  1. The adhesive spreads: ordinary sticky tape is not made for the friction inside a video mechanism. The adhesive warms up, oozes out and permanently glues further layers of tape together.
  2. Destroyed video heads: adhesive residue clogs the delicate heads of the recorder. Repairing the machine can then run into thousands.
  3. Loss of contact: sticky tape is too thick and too stiff. At best the recorder skips; at worst it jams again at the join and tears the tape further.

An important warning: if your tape has snapped, do not touch it and do not glue it. Put the cassette in its case and bring it in for a proper repair – that is the only way to be sure you will ever see the footage again.

How a professional repair and splice is done

When you bring or send us a damaged cassette, we treat it the way a surgeon treats a patient:

  1. Dismantling: we carefully take the cassette apart, which often means drilling out screws or releasing seized catches.
  2. Cutting out the damage: the crumpled or stretched section is removed with surgical precision. You lose a few seconds of footage, but the rest is saved.
  3. A professional splice: we use proper splicing tape, which is extremely thin, chemically stable and made specifically for magnetic tape. The join is almost invisible and passes safely through the mechanism.
  4. Transfer to a new shell: if the original shell is cracked or the reels have seized, we move the reels and tape into a new working cassette shell.

The price for this rescue, as set out in our price list and calculator, is 300 CZK per cassette – a small price for saving the whole recording.

Mould and dust: the silent killer

It is not only about snapping. We often get tapes that have been sitting in a damp cellar. If you see a white film on the tape, that is mould. Never put such a cassette into a recorder – the spores immediately contaminate the whole machine and can damage other tapes too.

Among our additional services we also offer tape cleaning. Before digitising, the tape is cleaned by hand so the picture is as clean as possible and the transfer runs safely.

The goal: digitised and safe

Repairing the cassette is usually only the first step. As soon as the tape is spliced and running, we digitise it. Transferring VHS to USB is the only guarantee the accident will not happen again – a digital file cannot snap, crumple or go mouldy.
